My Bad Bone Skate Company

Overview:
My Bad Bone Skate Company has partnered with Redbull® for 2013 promotion of it’s new line of pro-skater limited edition art decks and will be promoting the mini-site and social awareness campaign. You have been asked to build the creative for the look and feel of the micro-website and social engagement. A total of 3 finished JPG images of the final design will be required plus documentation via production blog of the process.

Approach:
My approach for this project was to design pages that were eye-catching. I wanted pages that were interesting, and that would draw peoples attention. We were given the logo for our prospective client; the logo was black, white, and red. I decided to stick with that colour theme so that it would coordinate with the company’s logo. I also had to include the Redbull logo in my design, so I needed to understand their branding in order to incorporate it well.

Challenge:
I found it challenging to design something that not only looked good, but also kept with the feel of the company. I do not have much experience or knowledge with skateboarding and related topics. I researched different companies and skateboarding websites to get a better feel of the direction I could go in for this project. I also did some research on Redbull to get a better feel for their company. We also had the challenge of taking photos of ourselves doing various skateboard tricks.

Goal:
My goal was to design a layout that worked well with the feel of the company, looked good, and was functional for prospective users. I wanted a website that did a good job of displaying and promoting the new line of pro-skater limited edition art decks.

Solution:
I went about my goals by designing and experimenting with multiple layouts until settling on the one that I liked best. As for the skateboard trick photos, I posed with a white background so that I could import the photos into Adobe Photoshop and edit them to look like I was actually performing on a skateboard.

To begin my skateboard, I researched different elements that I wanted to place in my design. Once I had the elements in mind, I then opened the template we were given in illustration.

After opening the template, I removed the markings for the wheels. I did this because I wanted to create a fluid design, not accounting for the placement of the wheels.

To begin the design, I started with adding a solid pink background that covered the entire art board.

I wanted to add some sort of pattern on top of the solid colour background, to make the design more interesting. I searched through all of the pattern swatches in InDesign until I settled on the pattern shown above.

I decided to add my largest element first, Audrey Hepburn. I placed her near the center of the board to start off. The Audrey Hepburn element was created from a picture of Audrey Hepburn, then using live-trace to create a vector.

This television was designed in a separate InDesign file before I brought it into the skateboard design. I placed this layer above the Audrey Hepburn layer so it would cover the bottom of her vector, as it was not the most appealing.

I then decided that Audrey Hepburn needed a white background, to make it pop out more as it blending into the background too much. I traced around the image using the pen tool and then placed it’s layer below the layer Audrey Hepburn was on.

I wanted to add a quote to my design, but first had to find an element that I wanted to place the quote into. After going through many types of ribbons and colour combinations, I settled on the gold gradient ribbon shown above.

After the ribbon, I placed the Audrey Hepburn quote “The best thing to hold onto in life is each other.” inside of the ribbon. I chose a script font because I felt it worked with the feminine nature of the design.

The bottom of the board was looking pretty empty, so I decided to add a black swirl to fill in the blank space. I extended the swirl outside of the template to allow for bleeding.

Now for the top of the skateboard, it needed a medium sized element, that also fit in with the theme of the design. Ultimately, I decided on the chandelier shown above. I thought it was very pretty and looked good with the rest of the board.

I felt the need to add a personal touch to the skateboard design, as this was my first one. To go with my WordPress blog, I added a anchor beside Audrey Hepburn. It added a funky look to the board, and also helped to fill in the blank space in that section of the board.

The background still seemed a bit plain, so splatter was added to give another texture and effect to the design. To ensure the file size was not too large, splatter was only added around the existing elements and not underneath (where they would not be seen).

The above screenshot shows the final skateboard design. Unfortunately during the printing process, I forgot to create outlines on the font, causing the font on the quote to be changed. In turn, the quote ended up being cut off. I included the above screenshot to show what it was supposed to look like.

This is the finished product. Once the sticker was printed out, I realized it was a bit larger than the skateboard I had purchased. This is obvious because the top of the chandelier did not make it onto the skateboard. I am still satisfied with the final result. I plan to reprint my design in the future, and make sure to buy the correct skateboard, also to create outlines on the text.
